Celebrating Success Continued: Gat Leedm Goes Electric
Metlakatla's own Gat Leedm Logistics has added brand-new zero- and low-emission hydrogen fuel-cell trucks to its fleet, leading the way in clean transportation on the North Coast.
Metlakatla's very own Gat Leedm Logistics is leading the way in clean transportation. The company has added brand-new zero- and low-emission hydrogen fuel-cell trucks to its fleet, including one of the world's first 2025-model hydrogen fuel-cell trucks. These vehicles are now running real routes on the North Coast, moving containers and freight while cutting down greenhouse gas emissions.
This pilot project is part of B.C.'s Integrated Marketplace, which helps companies test new technology in real-world conditions. For Gat Leedm, it means being able to see how these trucks perform on long hauls in northern weather, and what kind of fueling and charging infrastructure is needed to make them work long-term. With support from the Port of Prince Rupert and project partners, Gat Leedm is able to operate the trucks on active container runs, making the results even more meaningful.
Funding from the Province and Canada has supported Gat Leedm with the purchase of vehicles and charging stations, building on earlier investments that brought the first electric drayage trucks to the fleet. Now, with hydrogen fuel-cell and other advanced trucks on the road, Gat Leedm is showing that clean, heavy-duty trucking is possible — even in remote and challenging conditions.
Over the next year, Gat Leedm will collect data on how these trucks perform compared to diesel, sharing results that could shape the future of transportation across northern B.C. and beyond. The information gathered will not only guide Gat Leedm's future fleet decisions, but will also help other carriers, governments, and communities understand what's needed to move heavy freight in a cleaner, more sustainable way. By taking part in this pilot, Gat Leedm is helping put Metlakatla at the centre of innovation on the North Coast, ensuring that environmental leadership goes hand in hand with economic opportunity.
